Milton of Tulliemet Farm – Atholl Estates Transition to Regenerative Farming
Summary
We are looking for an exceptional person or people to partner in a unique and exciting opportunity.
Atholl Estates has 145,000 acres of hills, woodlands, and open countryside in Highland Perthshire, Scotland. The region is recognized as an area with high landscape value and rich biodiversity with the northern part of the estate within the Cairngorms National Park.
The 6000 acre Milton of Tulliemet Farm is one of two home farms on Atholl. With support and guidance from Roots of Nature LTD, the estate has made the significant and long-term decision to transition the land management of Milton of Tulliemet from traditional hill livestock farming to regenerative agriculture.
Objectives and strategy have been developed and we are now seeking an active partner to lead on delivering this ambitious plan. The opportunity is likely to be on the basis of a contract farming arrangement, although other arrangements may be considered.
We are looking for a self-motivated, hard-working, and organised person with considerable livestock experience and a passion for adopting regenerative agriculture on a landscape scale basis. The ability to contribute livestock to the business would be a significant advantage.
Milton of Tulliemet farm lies within an area of favourable, sandy soils and is in good agricultural condition. The land ranges from 2000ft above sea level to 500ft and includes a large block of predominantly heathland hill ground with some remnant Caledonian pine woods. The lower ground is productive and improved grassland with great potential for holistic planned grazing.
The opportunity is to lead the project forward with support from the estate management team and roots of nature LTD consultancy towards a regenerative farming plan that will include significant livestock production capacity along with impressive biodiversity gains.
The role will be both challenging and rewarding as you will be overseeing the practical elements of the transition as well as playing a central role in communicating the story to the public and special interest groups. Confidence and experience speaking to an audience and communicating via social media would be an advantage.
There will be lots of community engagement too, both with local landowners, partner organizations and the public. You will also be responsible for monitoring the important changes we hope to see in soil health, increased biodiversity and hydrology and communicating our progress to the public.
The successful applicant will be part of a new and exciting chapter of land management in the UK and one that’s gaining traction across the globe as a key solution to some of our most pressing global issues. Given the scale of the project and its potential, involvement through this leading position will bring significant reputational benefit.
The right partner will be prepared to do what it takes to make the project a success with the potential for this to become a model for the future of upland land management in Scotland.
If you think you are up to the challenge and can bring the assets and experience we need, please email info@rootsofnature.co.uk with a CV and cover email.
